The organisation
The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) is an independent rule maker and advisor for the National Electricity Market, natural gas market and related retail markets. It facilitates rule changes, carries out reviews and provides the nation’s Energy Ministers with advice on the design of regulatory and energy market arrangements. The AEMC is developing the right market settings to improve Australia's future productivity and living standards by contributing to a decarbonising, affordable and reliable energy system for consumers, through the transition and beyond.
The legal team at AEMC is collaborative, and offers expert support across various areas of energy law. The senior lawyer position is central to the team, providing legal advice on rule changes, governance issues, and energy regulations. This role is ideal for a legal professional with experience in complex, high-impact legal work within the energy sector, contributing to both ongoing legal matters and ad hoc challenges in the rapidly evolving energy environment.
The opportunity
Reporting to the Legal Director, the Senior Lawyer will:
- Provide expert legal advice on rule changes, governance, and compliance to support effective energy regulation and market development.
- Draft and review contracts, rule amendments, and policy documents, ensuring legal risks are identified and managed.
- Collaborate with project teams to deliver high-quality, legally sound recommendations and support strategic decision-making.
- Lead and mentor junior legal staff, fostering growth and capability within the team.
About you
- Experienced legal professional with 6+ years in energy, regulatory, or climate change law.
- Skilled in providing clear legal advice on complex regulatory issues and drafting legislation or rule amendments.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and provide credible legal input.
- Comfortable managing internal clients and working on discreet, high-impact projects within a policy and governance framework
