The Organisation

Laurel House provides vital, trauma-informed therapeutic services to victim-survivors of sexual assault and individuals impacted by harmful sexual behaviours. With centres in Launceston, Devonport, and Burnie, along with outreach services across northern Tasmania, Laurel House is a key provider of confidential, client-focused support. Additionally, Laurel House delivers the PAST (Prevention, Assessment, Support and Treatment) Program for children and young people (aged 17 years and under) who have displayed harmful sexual behaviours in North and North West Tasmania.

Working in partnership with the Tasmanian Government, Laurel House is leading the northern Arch multidisciplinary centre for victim-survivors of sexual harm. The organisation also delivers community education programs to prevent sexual violence and supports parents, carers, and service providers in responding to disclosures. Additionally, Laurel House advocates for individual and systemic change to create a safer and more supportive community for those affected by sexual harm.

The Opportunity


Laurel House is a seeking passionate and experienced Counsellor to provide high-quality, trauma-informed counselling to victim-survivors of sexual violence and individuals impacted by harmful sexual behaviours. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by supporting individuals of all ages through their healing journey.

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide direct counselling to children, young people, and adults who have experienced sexual harm, as well as their non-offending family members and caregivers.
  • Deliver therapeutic interventions in accordance with best-practice trauma-informed approaches.
  • Conduct risk and needs assessments to tailor support plans that enhance client wellbeing.
  • Work collaboratively with external agencies, including police, medical professionals, and community organisations, to provide holistic support.
  • Facilitate community education and training programs to improve awareness and prevention of sexual violence.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential case notes and reports in line with legal and ethical standards.
 
About You

Laurel House is seeking a dedicated and experienced Counsellor who will:
  • Hold a relevant qualification in Psychology, Social Work, Counselling, or a related field.
  • Have demonstrated experience providing trauma-informed counselling to individuals impacted by sexual violence or other complex trauma.
  • Display a deep understanding of the impacts of sexual violence and best-practice therapeutic interventions.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide empathetic, client-centred support.
  • Are committed to working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and with external agencies.
  • Have experience facilitating group programs or community education initiatives (desirable).
  • Are eligible for membership with a relevant professional body (e.g., AASW, PACFA, ACA, or APHRA).
  • Hold (or is willing to obtain) a current Working with Vulnerable People Registration and National Police Check.
This is a full-time or part-time opportunity based in Burnie, Devonport, or Launceston, with outreach responsibilities across Northern and North-West Tasmania.
